Ghetto BirdsPosted: October 25, 2011
I woke up at 5am this morning to the sound of helicopters disturbing the sky. I didn’t need to read the news or check my facebook to know that the State raided the Oakland Occupation Commune and violently ripped away the people, who were peacefully protesting the violence caused by this system. The violence caused through the paycheck that is never quite enough to put food in your babies mouth; the violence caused through school closures; daycare closures; free clinic closures; the violence that comes through barrels of police officers guns as you send thoughts of love out to your mother. I wrote this poem to ease my restless mind. This is for people everywhere, who stand up for the truth. All power to the people!
There are birds in the sky whose songs aren’t so serene
They rumble in between city landscapes
metal wings fill the atmosphere with tension
eyes made to spot Black flesh.
There are birds in the sky whose songs aren’t so serene.
